Oh, wow! Is that a clock?? Awesome. How do you tell the time?? Did you ever see the massive clock installation in Smal Street Mall in Johannesburg?
Emm - An armillary is actually just a glorified sundial. A shadow is cast onto one of inner bands that has the hours marked off. The other bands on the sphere will represent paths such as the Tropic of Cancer/Capricorn and the Arctic circles.
I haven't seen the clock in Smal Street Mall. Actually I haven't been to Johannesburg for a very long time. I'm going to add it to my to-do-list!
Hmmm. Well it was there in 1991 so it might be worth a phone call to make sure it's still there before you go venturing into town with a camera!!
